Emergency Dentistry Melbourne North West

Dental Emergency in Melbourne Dental Couture
A dental emergency can happen to anyone, which is why Dental Couture have been providing emergency dentistry services in the Melbourne North West area for 30 years and counting. Dental emergencies include toothaches, mouth infections, jaw pain or swelling and teeth that have been knocked out, chipped, cracked or broken. Early treatment improves the chance of saving your tooth or teeth and if you have an infection, early treatment is essential to stop the spread, which can lead to more pain and more costly treatment.

What are Dental Emergencies?

Emergency dentistry is a service that is not offered in a traditional Emergency Department (ED). Dentists are specially trained and equipped to handle situations that involve broken teeth, mouth infections and even lost dentures so patients can return to their normal routines quicker. Help for Dental Emergencies

If you or a loved one experiences a dental emergency, the first thing to remember is to not panic. If you experience profuse bleeding that will not stop, that is an emergency for the ED so head there to stop the bleeding. Other dental emergencies might be very painful, in which case an over-the-counter pain medication may help along with a cool cloth to the area of pain until you can come to see us.

When you do have a dental emergency, call our office right away and we will schedule your emergency appointment as soon as we can. While you are waiting to come in, there are some things you can do at home to improve your comfort levels until you arrive for your appointment. The following is a guide for what to do at home until your dental visit.

While you are waiting to come in, there are some things you can do at home to improve your comfort levels until you arrive for your appointment. The following is a guide for what to do at home until your dental visit.

TOOTHACHES OR JAW PAIN

When you feel pain in a tooth or your jaw, it may be a sign of decay or infection. Call us right away to schedule an emergency appointment. Next, gargle with warm salt water to calm the pain and swelling. Then check to see if food or debris is trapped in the gums or between teeth in the painful area, as the pressure on infected tissue can intensify the pain. If pain is persistent, apply a cool ice pack until your appointment. If the pain resides after these steps, follow through with your appointment so we can check for hidden cavities or an infection. Too often when the pain goes away, patients make the mistake of believing the problem is gone, but even small cavities and mild infections can quickly grow into larger dental problems like gum disease or tooth root infection.

CHIPPED, CRACKED AND BROKEN TEETH

If you had an accident such as trauma to the face or biting on something hard that damages your tooth or teeth, call right away and schedule an emergency visit with us. In many cases, the early treatment allows us to save the tooth or teeth, but the delay could lead to tooth loss or infection. While you are waiting for your appointment, apply a cool ice pack to your face to ease any swelling and rinse your mouth with warm salt water to remove debris and bacteria.

FACIAL SWELLING

If you have facial swelling, chances are you have a gum or tooth infection or abscess. Use over-the-counter pain medication to ease the pain and a cool compress to reduce the swelling. When you come to see us, we can identify the source of infection to remove it and stop the spread of the remaining infection. Simply taking antibiotics will not remove the source of infection and left untreated, it could spread to other parts of your body.

KNOCKED-OUT TEETH

We see many patients with teeth that get knocked out because of sports-related injuries, but it can also happen due to other forms of trauma such as an accident. In any case, stay calm and find the tooth but do not wash it with tap water. Place it is a clear container with enough saltwater or full-fat milk to cover it, then cover the container and call us right away. Teeth that have been knocked out have a great chance of recovery with reattachment if treated in 20 minutes. Let us know what happened when you call so we can schedule you as quickly as possible.

How Emergency Dentistry Will Help

Dentists are equipped to handle many dental emergency situations as we have the tools and skills to do so. Of course, profuse bleeding or trauma to your head is not dental emergencies and you should seek treatment at an ED. But for the more common dental emergencies, there are steps that we will take to help, such as:
Reduce or eliminate pain
Stop bleeding if applicable
Investigate the situation and diagnose treatment
Begin treatment
Drain abscesses to reduce swelling and begin to remove infection
Clean out tooth cavity or root to remove infection
Root canal therapy to clean the deep infections and end your pain
Provide antibiotics if necessary and/or provide pain medication if needed
